mudeford beach, england - november 2010

i still can't believe i spent many hours today working in the wrong version of my analysis chapter. since the beginning i found there was something strange as i couldn't find some information i expected would be there. also, a long bit i had deleted in the last / right version was there today. despite this i kept going until it became too complicated. only then i remembered i had started a new version to the chapter and that this one i had been working on was way too old, just not deleted yet. the new one is sign posted and everything. it was my lack of attention, really. i know crying doesn't help, but it worries me to think i that distracted [?].

upside down

9 june 2011

at the very moment:

- i am biting my nails. getting to the fingers soon.
15 june 2011 update: i polished my nails today. that means i won't bite them for a while.

- i have been working on a chapter for my upgrade viva. i know what and how to do it, but i don't go straight to the point and get the job done. i think and think and think and slowly do a bit of something. will i change someday? will i go somewhere this way?
15 june 2011 update: am done with a new version to the chapter, and have sent it out to ros. as always, wish i had done more, but am quite happy with what i accomplished so far.

- i will meet again with my supervisor next week. i wish sooo bad i could get to her with loads beautifully done, but something in the very inside of me holds me back from being the productive soul i idealize for myself.
17 june 2011 update: i will meet with her today. all ready and happy to meet up, but am a little worried about the allergic cold which i have now (again). whenever the weather blows any different wind or we get some rain i get ill. it is becoming routine, and i am not happy about it.

- yes, i am eating too much.

- my tv is not working. it has been over a month now. it seems the brand new and expensive aerial i bought not long ago is no longer good enough to get the digital signal. or is it that the tv is really old? i do miss watching tv, the news, the films, and the documentaries.
16 june 2011 update: mike fixed it, although he says it might not work fine for very long, since it apparently is about the digital signal. i even bought a new aerial from john lewis. now i have to give it back to the shop and be reimbursed on my money.

- my new mobile does not work properly. i can't ring brazil from it. i couldn't even text my sister from it yesterday. i have no internet connection on it either. i have no patience or time to go ring these people and spend forever with them on the phone to try and sort out these things. this time it seems i have no choice. i might try their shop in city, though.
23 june 2011 update: it is all sorted out. i now know what happened to my bill and everything is working properly. phew! it was nice to have karlota with me.

- my laptop is all the time shutting down unexpectedly. is it a virus? i have no antivirus now. but i only want to buy one when i know for certain it is going to work.

- my blogger / gmail (?) account is upside down, inside out, completely out of order, out of control. it feels like i have zero competence to manage any sort of technology programme or device.
13 june 2011 update: problem sorted out thanks to Karen.

if you know where the light is, please do not hesitate to contact me.

concentrated

9 july 2010
this is me planning the course – still checking out on last minute changes in my plans for the carrying out of the course. worried about the whole process, worried about managing everything properly, but also confident that it will all be fine in the end. all texts are already printed out and put together to be handed to the participants. my family is so absolutely supportive it makes me feel i am not left with much to fear. this course has the new ingredient of it being carefully observed by me. i have a twofold role time, both as the facilitator and as researcher. i am happy. amem!

the list, the draft

6 junho 2010
these are notes, a list, a first draft of some events and ideas for posts here in the blog. i plan to write them, but time not always allows. the list has not made a trip to the bin, i do want to talk about the points i marked when they were happening this week, not certain of when exactly. i have been so busy. can i complain? yes i can but i don't think i should.

i am the type of writer who never sees a piece as finished the first time i touch it. i like to draft, think about it, let it sleep a little, work more on it, until i have the feeling i have accomplished my purpose. it is possible for me to do it in my academic work, which pleases me. writing and revising, editing, deleting, adding up information to a text is such an entertaining activity.

however, here in the blog i exercise on developing a different approach to writing. i want and need it to be more relaxed, freer, and something that should not take up much of my time. whenever it does, it is stealing time which should be devoted to  my priority here, my academic work. this is why i try to go simpler and ultimately find a balance between dedicating the necessary time to my study and still posting in the blog. i have come to appreciate the blog posting a great deal. it is very good in many ways, but this is topic for a different post. oh, Lord! i believe i go back to every single post and do a little revision or add up details because i think it is not clear enough when i read it. this is the third time i write on this one here. and am done with it now. i am kalina, the editing woman. nice to meet you.

training session: writing

10 may 2010

Humanities training session
“Writing for a PhD: skills and techniques”
Monday 10th May
1 - 3 p.m. 65/1097
Instructor: Professor John McGavin

The session had 20 students. Very many people need support on their writing.
Precious tips from the beginning of the session: 1. stop thinking about yourself; 2. stop thinking about your reader. These should get you going.

We had two major group activities:

1. first part:
we were paired up with a student who is not from our same department, and swapped pieces of writing. First, we talked about our own subject area; then, we read each other’s papers.
My pair was Cristina, from Sweden. She is a first year PhD student in Archaeology, doing research on food culture from the Bronze age in Scandinavia.
My writing is not even a proper writing yet. It is only part of my thoughts on my methodology. I was hoping she would help me – give me ideas – on how to organise the writing.

Cristina's feedback on my writing: = I need to signpost my information and organise information.

I was at first frustrated with this feedback, because I hoped she would give me more, save me; suggest a structure to my mess. How could she say what I already knew? But, because she did not do so, I felt I was back in square zero. I kept thinking about her feedback and my expectations until I thought: ‘well, maybe my piece is not too bad after all. Maybe I only need to really revise it, and so what she suggests.’

What I learned from it: (a) writing is difficult, as repeated and cliché as it seems; yes, it is difficult. (b) we need other people’s eyes on our papers to point out what we can no longer see. An outside reader always proposes an alternative to our ideas. (c) I don’t know what should come first, if a draft (stream of consciousness writing) or an outline (a plan), because to organize a piece of writing from a draft is complicated and time-consuming.

From each one:
(a) reader’s need determines the info we provide
(b) linking, no hopping (between ideas / points)
(c) don’t assume too much knowledge on the reader – define terms
(d) long sentences are not preferable
(e) take care of jargon (it’s a potential danger to yourself. Jargons come in a package)
(f) simplicity is not bad
(g) reader has to understand sequence
(h) use a ragbag (good quotes in a separate file)
(i) don’t be afraid to empower the reader
(j) a problem in writing talks about a problem in thinking
(k) have a mixture between long and short sentences. Short sentences are better. Too long sentences read like writer is lost, not organized. Too short sentences mean no connection
(l) have a clear line of argument / goal, so that theory can support it
(m) keep aims up front and people can see them. Focus on argument
(n) stay aware of structure / function
(o) how to get started – revise – select – refine (???) what works best varies from person to person. Maybe you have to reorganize everything back again
(p) signpost coherent sequence.

2. second part
We formed different dyads to again exchange our pieces of writing. Peer chose (a) best sentence and (b) worst sentence. we talked about it, why I /she found this and that the worst / the best. My pair this time was Emilie, another Swedish girl, also from Archaeology. Her writing was too technical. I couldn’t understand much.

→ avoid:
- abstract words (value, concepts rather words related to the topic)
- too long footnotes. Put it in to the text
- words like: via, important
- inconfidence (get rid of that person and write to serve your reader. The ghost will disappear)

It was a very helpful training session. Maybe we should have it more often, same format / idea.

off track

15 nov 2009 - sunday 1.39pm - avenue campus

i have been off track, basically. this is probably the most honest statement i utter in the last few weeks. now i am swamped with work, desperate because of deadlines, and feeling unproductive. this is a thesis statement of my text today, a synthesis of the whole situation.

i have made some decisions that would apparently help me keep focused in my main purpose here in uk, which is to carry out my phd research. that has been the truth, however. it all started over the summer and the situation has been going on and on and on. i need to understand it at least so that i can think of doing something about it.

for the summer i found a wonderful, rewarding, job. it was rewarding in various aspects: academically and professionally because it dealt exactly with my passion for writing and for academic life in general. so, being part of a team that was set up to help prepare international students for their academic life here was without a doubt superb, of course even helping myself in the same terms. it was also quite handy, actually, this job was a life saver, because the pay went directly to my fees here at uni.

but but but . . . the work did not stop after 10 weeks. i was very very glad i had the chance to teach the extra two weeks, but i now wonder if i did the right thing. i need to find time for my academic work here. and i have not done this lately. ros is very angry at me. i don't understand it all, as it gives me the feeling she doesn't trust me, but in a way she is right. if i had not had so much distraction from my research i would probably be in better shape concerning my plans to Brazil, for instance.

movie and book: 'Le scaphandre et le papillon'

 Jean-Do dictating his book. .
                                                               photo from wikipedia

I saw this movie a few days ago. It is impressive how Jean Dominique Bauby (Jean-do) managed to write a book by only blinking his left eye after he had a cerebro-vascular accident. At the beginning of the movie he is waking up from a 3-week coma after the accident. we see the room in the hospital from his perspective, from what his eyes manage to see. It is sort of disturbing. Well, the doctors and therapists come by and talk to him about his problem and explain to him he has this 'locked-in syndrome' and thus will need help for anything he might need or want. There is a strong scene when the doctor stictches his right eye. Jean-do is bedridden but his brain works perfectly. From his perspective we see the doctor coming close to him and saying that he is going to stich his eye because it is dry, no longer good. stitch by stitch we see a wondow being closed.

He start different therapies: physical, and speech therapy. we hear his thoughts throughout the film. he says that after the accident he only has his memories and his imagination left to him. when this therapist comes to help him she teaches him to dictate to her what he wants to say, by blinking his left eye. amazing!!! everyone should watch this movie and, i believe, read the book.

i ordered the book and already got it in the mail. i'll read it as soon as i have some free time.

A new start

Lovers walk is on my way to Avenue Campus

15 October 2009
6.22pm - Southampton, Hampshire, UK

I am trying to start a new blog, this time calling it The Soton Times, which is the name i informally have been giving to some of my writings about my experience here in the UK since September 2008.

For some reason my writings have had a little downfall these days. I believed it started over the summer, but it will come back as fruitful as it has been in good previous times, so i want it to.

i will add to this post later on, and include a photograph to it eventually.

cheers
Kalina
