Ultimamente por aqui só
chove e faz frio, num clima de inverno com dias cinzentos. Isso mesmo, por
enquanto as expectativas de verão não tem se confirmado. Tivemos uma semana e
meia de dias mais mornos e com sol brilhando, mas esse se recolheu de novo,
para dar lugar à chuva. Segundo alguns amigos meus, a Kassandra trouxe os
lindos dias ensolarados de Teresina com ela, mas os levou de volta. Danada essa
menina.
Quem estuda inglês em
livro produzido no Reino Unido aprende logo a dizer ‘umbrella’ –
guarda-chuva. Aí, quando chega aqui, se acostuma com outras peculiarides locais:
- a dizer ‘brollies’
por umbrella;
- faz um estoque de
guarda-chuvas, porque o vento, sempre forte, nao lhes permite vida longa. Eu
tenho talvez cinco sombrinhas, nenhuma delas inteira a essas alturas;
- a escutar o povo
reclamando do tempo o tempo todo, e a dizer que o tempo aqui é imprevisivel; e a
ouvi-los chamar a chuvinha suave, porem contínua, de chuva torrencial. Tudo é
uma questão de como vemos os fatos;
- a ver pessoas que param
o trabalho para ir dar uma caminhada, mesmo que breve, no parque, para
aproveitar o sopro de [imprevisto] sol que se manifesta. Hoje no final da
tarde, a caminho de casa, encontrei a Melissa, de Taiwan, a Silke, da Austria,
e a Marylin, de Malta, vindo de uma dessas caminhadas no parque Common.
Vamos ao evento de hoje:
no dia 7 de junho recebemos convite para um churrasco para comemorar o fim do
ano letivo, no dia 15 de junho, sexta-feira passada. Deve ser um desejo de
fazer um programa de verão, o que nem sempre dá certo. Aqui todo programa ao ar
livre traz a ressalva ‘se São Pedro ajudar’ [weather permitting]. Desde
o primeiro convite há o alerta da possível mudancça de planos por conta da
chuva, que se confirmou, e o churrasco foi trocado por um encontro no pub. A
promessa do churrasco está mantida.

Dear All Humanities Postgraduates,
Due to the reliably rainy British
'summer', we have decided to postpone the below-advertised picnic, and instead
will be meeting at the Cowherds (on the edge of the Common) from 1pm tomorrow,
for those who would like to meet up to talk about anything at all!
We will still hold the picnic on a
date to be decided - preferably when the sun decides to stay for more than an
hour or two! So please keep your eyes peeled for a rearranged event over the
next few weeks.
We look forward to celebrating all
of the year's successes with you tomorrow - hope to see you there!

Subject: HPGC End of Year Picnic!
Dear All Humanities Postgraduates,
Amongst all the hectic end of year
plans, we wanted to include a little something to look forward to! HPGC is
therefore planning an End Of Year Picnic on the mini-common across the road
from Avenue Campus on Friday 15 June 2012, from 1pm.
Let's get together to celebrate
and share some good food and good company as the (British) summer begins! So
that the burden does not fall on any one individual, the plan is to each bring
a dish to share with one another. Feel free to inform us of your dish on the
Facebook group wall of this event, or via email to hxxx@xxxxx, so that we can attempt to have a good mixture of food!
Hopefully we've timed this
correctly, and most people will be finished with their assessments for the
academic year.
Please bring your own blanket or
lawn chair as well. Plastic and paper tableware will be provided. Drink
contributions are also welcome! If the rain decides to stay for this event, we
will rearrange the venue and let you know in good time.
